Valère Basilica
The Valère Basilica crowns a rocky hilltop above Sion in the canton of Valais, Switzerland, facing the ruined Tourbillon Castle across the valley on the adjacent hill. Built in Romanesque style between 1100 and 1130 as the seat of the cathedral chapter of the Diocese of Sion, it was enlarged through the 13th century with Gothic ribbed vaulting and a choir screen.
Pope John Paul II elevated it to a minor basilica on 7 October 1987, and former chapter rooms now house the Cantonal Historical Museum of Valais. Its most remarkable treasure is a swallow-nest pipe organ built around 1435, widely regarded as one of the oldest playable organs in the world, restored in the 1950s and still in working order. It anchors an annual ancient music festival held here every summer since 1969.
