Hohenzollern Castle
Hohenzollern Castle rises from the 855-meter summit of Mount Hohenzollern in Baden-Württemberg, about 50 km south of Stuttgart. Ancestral seat of the House of Hohenzollern, whose dynasty ruled Prussia and imperial Germany, the current Gothic Revival structure was built 1846–1867 by architect Friedrich August Stüler on the commission of King Frederick William IV. Two earlier castles had stood here: the first destroyed in 1423 after a year-long siege, the second abandoned after its last owner departed in 1798.
The castle remains private property of the Hohenzollern family and is open to the public, attracting between 300,000 and 400,000 visitors a year. Its treasury holds Frederick the Great's military coat bearing a bullet hole from the Battle of Kunersdorf.
