Trakai Island Castle
Trakai Island Castle sits on an island in Lake Galvė, 28 kilometres west of Vilnius, Lithuania. Construction was initiated by Grand Duke Kęstutis in the later 14th century and completed by his son Vytautas the Great around 1409. Built of red Gothic brick, the fortress features a six-story keep, residential palace wings, and a water-separated outer courtyard.
It served as a principal residence of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania at its height; Vytautas died here in 1430. Wars with Muscovy in the 17th century left it ruined, but reconstruction begun in 1951 was complete by 1961. It now operates as the Trakai History Museum, drawing around 300,000 visitors annually.
