Predjama Castle
Predjama Castle fills the mouth of a cavern beneath a 123-metre cliff in southwestern Slovenia, 9 km from Postojna Cave. The Patriarch of Aquileia built the original Gothic fortress here in 1274; the current Renaissance structure dates to 1570, built under the Cobenzl family who held the castle from 1567.
Its most famous occupant, the knight Erasmus of Lueg, withstood a prolonged Habsburg siege in 1484, resupplied through a natural vertical shaft enlarged through the rock to a hidden exit at the cliff top. He was eventually betrayed by one of his own men and killed the same year. Nationalized after World War II, it became a museum of medieval life and cave archaeology. It has held the Guinness World Records title of world's largest cave castle since 2015.
