Ljubljana Castle
Ljubljana Castle crowns a steep hill at the centre of the Slovenian capital, its silhouette visible from across the city. Human settlement on the hill dates to around 1200 BC, but the stone fortress took its present form mainly in the 15th century, when Habsburg rulers rebuilt walls and towers as a defence against Ottoman raids.
For centuries it served as the seat of the lords of Carniola and later as a prison. The city of Ljubljana purchased the castle in 1905, and after extensive renovations it reopened as a cultural venue hosting concerts, exhibitions, and weddings. A funicular railway installed in 2006 carries visitors up from the old town, and the Panoramic Tower offers views of the Julian Alps and Karawanks.
