Human settlement on the rock dates to the late Bronze Age, with a royal fortress documented under Malcolm III in the 11th century. Over its history the castle served as royal residence, arsenal, treasury, mint, and prison, enduring 26 recorded sieges — more than any other castle in Britain. St Margaret's Chapel, built during the reign of David I (1124–1153), is Edinburgh's oldest surviving building.

Today it is operated by Historic Environment Scotland, open to the public, and Scotland's second most visited paid attraction, welcoming over two million visitors in 2025.
