Peles Castle
Set in the Carpathian Mountains near Sinaia, Romania, Peles Castle was built as the summer residence of King Carol I between 1873 and 1914. Three architects shaped its Neo-Renaissance exterior; the interior's over 170 rooms contain almost 2,000 artworks and 4,000 weapons. At its 1883 inauguration it became the world's first castle fully powered by locally produced electricity.
Confiscated by the communist regime, it became a state museum in 1953 and was closed entirely from 1975 to 1989 under Ceaușescu. It was returned to the Romanian Royal Family in 2007 and is now leased to the state. The castle museum is open Wednesday through Sunday, drawing between 250,000 and 400,000 visitors annually.
