Mir Castle Complex
Mir Castle Complex rises above a small river in Mir, Grodno Oblast, Belarus. Construction began after 1500 under Yury Ilyinich, a nobleman of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania, producing a square courtyard with four corner towers and a taller gatehouse in late Brick Gothic style.
The Radziwiłł family acquired it in 1568 and added Renaissance palace wings. It was damaged in 17th-century wars, sacked by Swedish forces in 1706, fought over in Napoleon's 1812 campaign, and converted to a ghetto by German occupiers in WWII. After Soviet-era neglect and restoration, UNESCO inscribed it a World Heritage Site in 2000. The castle, ramparts, chapel, and park are all open to visitors.
