Lida Castle
Lida Castle stands at the confluence of the Lida and Kamenka rivers in Lida, western Belarus, built by Grand Duke Gediminas of Lithuania between 1323 and 1325 to defend against Teutonic Knight incursions. The trapezoid-shaped fortress of stone and brick anchored a defensive chain protecting Vilnius. Despite its strength, the Teutonic Knights captured it in 1384 and 1392, and Swedish forces destroyed both towers during the Great Northern War.
Restoration work culminating around 2010 rebuilt the walls and a tower. The castle today hosts annual medieval knightly tournaments and is developing museum facilities within its towers.
