Kamianets-Podilskyi Castle
Kamianets-Podilskyi Castle occupies a naturally fortified peninsula in a canyon carved by the Smotrych River in Khmelnytsky Oblast, Ukraine. Fortifications here developed across 14 building phases from the 11th century onwards, with a major renovation directed by military engineer Iov Pretevych recorded in 1544. The fortress repelled Tatar raids 51 times between the 15th and 17th centuries, yet fell to Ottoman forces under Sultan Mehmed IV in 1672, remaining under Ottoman control until 1699.
Decommissioned in 1812, it now operates as a National Historical-Architectural Reserve and is counted among the Seven Wonders of Ukraine. According to local tradition, Sultan Osman II, who failed to take the city in 1621, asked who had built such fortifications and was told: "God himself."
