Khotyn Fortress, a B-tier castle in Ukraine

Khotyn Fortress stands on the right bank of the Dniester River in western Ukraine, one of the designated Seven Wonders of Ukraine. A wooden fort built here in the 10th century by Prince Vladimir the Great preceded stone construction that began in the late 14th century; Moldavian ruler Stephen the Great expanded it massively in the 15th century, raising walls up to 40 metres tall.

The fortress is best known for the Battle of Khotyn in 1621, when around 50,000 Commonwealth troops held off an Ottoman army estimated at 100,000. The Ottomans later reinforced the defences further. Designated a State Historical-Architectural Reserve in 2000, the complex is open to visitors on the Dniester riverbank.

Methodology

A castle here means anything Wikipedia lists as a castle — which often includes fortresses, palaces, monasteries, and châteaux. The list also includes historicist creations like Neuschwanstein, but only when their main construction was completed before the 20th century.

All castles are sorted into tiers based on nothing but the author’s vibe and whim. Feel free to rearrange them however you personally see fit. Ultimately, the criteria were not historical significance or defensive capability, but how exciting a visit there would likely be.
