Dubovac Castle
Dubovac Castle overlooks Karlovac in central Croatia from an elevated mound above the Kupa River. First documented in 1339, it was rebuilt in stone by the Frankopan family with a square plan featuring one tall square defensive tower and three smaller cylindrical towers — a mix of Gothic and Renaissance design. The Zrinski family also held it, and Ottoman forces damaged it in a 1578 raid. In 1837 Count Laval Nugent rebuilt it in the Romantic style.
Excavations beneath the castle revealed Late Bronze Age and Early Iron Age settlement layers. Today it functions as a tourist attraction with a permanent museum exhibition and a viewpoint from the highest tower.
