Toompea Castle
Toompea Castle crowns the limestone hill of Toompea at the heart of Tallinn, Estonia, a site fortified since ancient times and seized by Danish crusaders under King Valdemar II in 1219. The Order of the Brethren of the Sword and later the Teutonic Order, Sweden, and Russia each held it in turn.
The most dramatic survivor is the slender Pikk Hermann (Tall Hermann) tower, 48 metres high, where Estonia's blue-black-white flag is raised at sunrise to the national anthem and lowered at sunset each day. Today the castle houses Estonia's parliament, the Riigikogu, in a chamber completed in 1922 and noted for its Expressionist interior — a rarity among parliament buildings worldwide.
