Winchester Castle, a C-tier castle in United Kingdom

Winchester Castle was founded by William the Conqueror in 1067 on the western edge of Winchester, England, on a site previously occupied by a Roman fortification. For over a century it served as the principal seat of Norman royal government. The Great Hall, rebuilt by Henry III between 1222 and 1235, is considered one of the finest surviving medieval halls in England and is the castle's only substantial structure still standing — the rest was demolished on Cromwell's orders in 1649.

Displayed on its wall is the Winchester Round Table, an oak tabletop dated by dendrochronology to around 1275 and associated with Arthurian legend; it was repainted for Henry VIII, who added his own portrait as King Arthur. The Great Hall is open to the public as a museum.
