Falkland Palace, a C-tier castle in United Kingdom

Falkland Palace stands in the village of Falkland in Fife, Scotland, a Renaissance residence built by Scottish kings on the site of a medieval castle held by the Earls of Fife. James IV and James V transformed it between 1497 and 1541, its courtyard facades modelled on French chateaux. James V died here in December 1542 after his army's defeat at Solway Moss, and Mary, Queen of Scots was among its most frequent royal visitors. Cromwell's troops partly burned it in the 1650s; John, 3rd Marquis of Bute, funded restoration from 1887.

The palace contains the oldest real tennis court still in use anywhere in the world, built by James V in 1541. Managed by the National Trust for Scotland, it is open to the public.
