Lincoln Castle
Built in 1068 by William the Conqueror on the site of the Roman fortress of Lindum Colonia in Lincoln, England, this medieval castle is remarkable for having two earthen mottes — a feature shared in England only with Lewes Castle. It holds one of just four surviving original copies of the 1215 Magna Carta, displayed in a purpose-built exhibition created during a 2012–2015 renovation.
The 19th-century prison chapel, designed so each seat enclosed its occupant individually, is claimed to be the only surviving example of its kind in the world. Crown Courts still operate within the walls. Open to the public.
