Hluboka Castle
Hluboká Castle stands on a promontory above the Vltava River near České Budějovice in southern Bohemia. A Gothic fortress existed here from the second half of the 13th century, but the present Neo-Gothic appearance dates to a transformation of 1841–1871 commissioned by Johann Adolf II of Schwarzenberg, modelled on Windsor Castle.
The Schwarzenberg family owned the estate from 1661 until 1939, when their Czech properties were confiscated in 1947. State-owned since then, the castle houses the South Bohemian Gallery (since 1956) and draws nearly 300,000 visitors annually, ranking among the most-visited castles in the Czech Republic.
