Loket Castle
Loket Castle stands on a massive rock almost entirely encircled by the Ohre River in western Bohemia, Czech Republic. The stone fortress dates to the 12th century and was expanded in Gothic style, earning the epithet "the Impregnable Castle of Bohemia" — it withstood Hussite siege attempts in 1421, 1427, and 1429, and was taken only once, in 1319, through deception by King John of Luxembourg.
Wenceslaus IV oversaw major reconstruction in the 1390s. The castle served as a state prison from 1792 to 1948. Today it is a museum and national monument with nine exhibition sections, including a fragment of the Elbogen meteorite — the original weighed some 107 kg and reportedly fell in 1422. The town and castle also served as the Montenegro setting in the 2006 Bond film Casino Royale.
