Krivoklat Castle
Křivoklát Castle crowns a rocky spur above the Rakovnický stream in central Bohemia, Czech Republic. A royal hunting retreat since the 12th century, it was rebuilt as a major Přemyslid stronghold around 1230, with significant Gothic reconstruction after 1471 under Vladislav Jagellonský directed by masters Benedikt Rejt and Hans Spiess. The castle served as a feared state prison — Edward Kelley, the English alchemist, was among its long-term captives.
Sold to the Czechoslovak state in 1929 and now managed by the National Heritage Institute, it is open to visitors. Its Gothic chapel houses an altarpiece from the 1490s, and the Fürstenberg library contains some 52,000 volumes assembled across Europe.
