Miramare Castle
Miramare Castle stands on a promontory above the Gulf of Trieste, about 6 km north of the city. Built from 1856 to 1860 for Austrian Archduke Ferdinand Maximilian and designed by Austrian architect Carl Junker in a neo-medieval and neo-Gothic style, his private study and adjacent rooms were fitted out to resemble a ship's cabin and stern wardroom, reflecting his role as Commander in Chief of the Austrian Navy.
He left for Mexico in April 1864 and was executed by firing squad in June 1867. Original 19th-century furnishings survive intact throughout. The surrounding 22-hectare park contains cedars of Lebanon, giant sequoias, and ginkgo trees. Since 1955 the castle has operated as an Italian state museum.
