Castello Estense
A moated medieval fortress at the center of Ferrara in northern Italy. Commissioned by Marquis Niccolò II d'Este on 29 September 1385 following a popular uprising over taxes and flooding, and designed by architect Bartolino da Novara, its four corner towers and water-filled moat remain intact today.
The Este family transformed it over generations into a sumptuous ducal residence; the Alabaster Chambers built by Alfonso I housed his art collection, including works by Titian and Dosso Dossi. After Alfonso II died without heirs in 1597 Ferrara reverted to the papacy, and the castle then housed papal legates. Now a museum open to visitors.
